Ensconced at the eastern range of Ernakulam district in Kerala, Chelad is a quaint village bordering Keerampara with its breath taking views and historical surprises. The  Holy Bes Ania Church is situated here in Chelad about 5 Km from Kothamangalam, the erstwhile seat of Chera Kings.

The serenity of the Holy " Thekkekurishu " is a solace to many thousands of worshippers.

The Church was established in 1871 AD  under the leadership of Mr. Mathu Varkey, Chundalnal Kottisserikkudiyil. Pulikkottil Joseph Mar Dionasius Metropolitan laid the foundation stone for the church on 22 Thulam (Nov.07, 1871 AD) in the name of St.Stephen, the first martyr of christanity.

The first vicar of the church is said to be Rev.Fr.Thoma , Ayathukudy who was also one of the vicars of St.Mary's Church, Kothamangalam at that time.
